Vivarelli Fly Reels
Franco Vivarelli Fly Reels received the EFFTEX "best innovation" award in 2004. These fly reels have a mechanism for the automatic reeling in of the line. So with a simple click on the "special handle" you can immediately get all your line back, a useful device for special fishing conditions and for an ultra-light fishing experience. Actually, they are semi-automatic since you can use the reel as a normal reel as well (and you also have a removable spool). The lever (one or two clicks) can be activated for instance when you are dealing with a big fish and need to follow it quickly without tangling the line in the vegetation. The reel material is in carbon fibers or aluminium so it's sturdy and light. in 1982, Franco started the production the Vivarelli Fly Reels after many years of experimenting around a "Martin" reel - the oldest active American fly reels manufacturer - in order to find a way to reel in the line very quickly. Pflueger and, Mitchell also had automatic reels in the '60s and '70s. Initially the public response was mainly from France but then the idea of an automatic fly reel designed for ultra-light fishing caught on worldwide. Curiosly enough, even in my Angling Club in Milan, the Vivarelli reels are not always well considered despite the fame. Probably, it's true that you cannot (always) be a prophet in your own country as we say it here... Franco Vivarelli passed away a few years ago, enough to be able to see the global success of his invention.
