Surf fishing rods and reels

surf fishing rods and reels

Welcome in my surf fishing rods and reels webpage.

Here a choice of article that I wrote on surf fishing. I did my little experience in surf fishing while living in South Africa and getting "my feet wet" in the corner of Umhlanga and Ballito, near Phoenix (Durban coast). The picture above is from the Cape (Capetown I mean) from a Flickr user...but it's not dissimilar to what I did: surf casting.

The most important aspect when surf fishing and especially surf casting is to look at tide timetables. For casting the lowest time moment was for me crucial since it was impossible otherwise to actually even get at the sea shore.

Another example is to fish during the rising tide when fishing with lures on a reef in Oahu, Hawaii

Another thing. Get ready to loose lots of baits and terminal tackle. The reef and rocks are everywhere.

Successfull surf fishing is basically reading the surf and choosing the right spot (e.g. sandy breaks in the reef as hunting places for predators).

TIPS

  • Use polarized sun glasses or lenses
  • Never drop your reel on the sand ....:-)

"Sea fish & how to catch them"
by Lord, William Barry, 1863

It should always be borne in mind, when selecting
a line, that the finer it is, consistent with the requisite
strength to hold the fish, the greater will be the
chance of testing its powers. Pine tackle is always
more destructive than coarse in cool, deliberate hands ;
but to those who prefer physical strength to careful
management, I should recommend a good stout rope
at once.

All such lines as are not dressed with the
waterproofing liquid, referred to under the head
"Dressing," should be "barked," which can be done
at any tan-yard for a mere trifle.

The time occupied in barking an ordinary hand line
is about forty-eight hours. The durability of lines is
much increased by their being so treated.
