Spey Casting
Spey casting techniques were explained broadly at my angling club. It was
all new to me and frankly I would certainly like to give it a try...so many
advantages!
Massimo
Malli, flyfishing guide and instructor (20+ years of teaching!) and Raffaele
Mascardi explained the techniques of
using... a
two hands fly rod, during an excellent evening lecture at flyangling
club in Milan.
I could only see advantages in trying this lesser popular flyfishing techniques
- one of them is called "Spey" from the river in Englad where it originated
100 years ago. Perhaps, beginning flyfishing gives me the advantage of a fresh
eye on everything, but I found the lecture a real eye opener.
The advantages of two hands rod flyfishing are:
- Despite the fact that the rod is longer - 11', 14' and more -, you can
actually fish in very limited space because the movements do not require
as much as a space behind and above as for a traditional one hand technique.
Thus, you can go fishing in areas which are unexplored by traditional fly-fishermen.
- You normaly fish with heavier baits, nymphs and streamers thus catching
larger sized fish and all over the year.
- You can fish in medium and large sized rivers, lakes, at sea including
surf fishing because you can cast longer distances.
- The SPEY techniques can applied and used in normal, one hand,
fly fishing
I am not an expert at all, but when it comes to learning in the best possible
way I do it in two ways: by reading abook and possibly looking at pictures....And
then of course practice, practice, practice.
So the book I found is really excellent and the DVD nicely round-off dynamically
what the theory says. During that evening, both text and movie were used, as
well. And this
TIP!
To begin flyfishing with two hands you can buy a 14' rod.
This is what Massimo and Raffaele suggested us.
Why not trying it now?
