Say you are used to surf fishing in California and now you are on a fishing vacation trip to Ohau, Hawaii and have the following material in your equipment:
STARTING EQUIPMENT
- a 9ft surf rod (a little short but ok in Hawaii)
- 12 lbs of monofilament
- size 1/0 and 6 hooks
- gulp shrimp and sand crabs
- a needle fish lure
- 2 oz pyramid sinkers
- 1.5 oz egg sinkers
- 1 oz ball sinkers
- frozen squid
Is that enough?
Here some shore fishing tips on Oahu
Equipment tips
- Use eavier line and larger hooks
- Add some surface poppers
- in general: you can use plastic lures, such as swimbaits and Gulp (= resembling shrimp and small fish), strips and pieces of the squid
- 12 lbs = small lures, floater rigs
- carolina rigs are ok
- lures: castmasters, krocodiles, crystal minnows, omilu feathers light yellow, light blue/silver or black
Location Tips
reef off Diamond Head
shallow reef: use lures (and so avoid moray eels), stay surface or mi-water (danger of loosing the terminal tackle in the reef)
If you fish lures on the reefs, best time is when the tide is rising
