Shakespeare Fishing Reels

Two things about Shakespeare fishing reels: they exist since 1897 (!), they belong to Pure Fishing which in turns is a group of the K2 Corporation. In beetween, two World Wars (with a conversion to the military gears), world recessions, lunar landing and a warming planet!

Their history is thus impossible to concentrate in a few words and is well explained on their website: William Shakespeare, Jr., of Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, then 27 (1896) wanted to share his tiny contribute to make this world a better world by improving the fishing reels of those days. He improved an existing reel (since the reel revolved faster than the line runoff) and patented the first level-wind reel which automatically spread the line evenly when reeling in.

Today, the company produces rods, reels and combos.

A few mile-stones are here summarized:

1939, Wondereel®, a reel which prevents the back lash of the line

1946, manufacturing of monofilament line

1950, June 25 William Shakespeare, Jr. passed away

1966, acquires Pflueger

1979, Anthony Industries of Los Angeles, CA buys 35% of Shakespeare shares

1985, Ugly Stik Tiger rods, for big game

1986, Ugly Stik Jr. Kits

1992, Pflueger Medalist® fly rods, entering the fly rod arena

1993, 2500 ULX spinning reel, entering the ultra light arena

1995, Sigma® baitcast reel, Microspin® and Microcast® reels. Re-eintering baitcast arena
