Orvis Fly Fishing Rods are sold through one of the largest and THE oldest mail order company in the US (it was founded earlier than Sears!). The company is run and owned by the family Perkins and is the oldest fishing rod manufacturer in the world. Until 1967, Orvis concentrated uniquely on the construction of fishing rods and flies (with the exclusions of some rough times like after the 1929 stock market crush which saw Orvis reduced to 2 employee and fixing bycicle; during War World II they were making sking poles for the army). By 1965, the company was sold to the Perkins Family, and Orvis started an incredible well managed expansion and added new products (e.g. , fishing schools in the late '60s, fly fishing reels by 1974; the late '80s, fly fishing and hunting vacations). But of course the manufacturing of fishing rods was kept close at heart and Orvis continued a impressive series of innovations and awards.
I have the impression that Orvis outsource or buy some of its products from other companies and then resell the products with its own name, today. Which per se is not bad. For instance, I know that the world number one producer of fly fishing flies is selling them to Orvis which label them as its brand. Well, Orvis was founded in 1856 by the business acumen of Charles Frederick Orvis (an avid fly angler, bamboo rod builder and fly-tier as well), and it's clear that they can afford to take whatever is in their means to offer to the upper middle-class the best, be it fishing or hunting equipment, vacations and gifts. Orvis catalogs are a real pleasure to receive and start day dreaming... Orvis Fly fishing rods are still made in-house and they have their own rod designers Not to forget among the huge catalog are also certainly the orvis accessories (e.g. rod tubes). Orvis fly fishing rods recommendations: HeliosTM, Zero GravityTM fly rods (trout fishing), Superfine TM. Orvis also produces and sells bamboo fly rods (made in Vermont).
