Announcement for the The International Custom Rod Building Exposition, High Point, North Carolina, USA, 26-27 February.
"Why High Point, NC? Because High Point is uniquely suited to host this type of event. In fact, High Point is home to the International World Home Furnishings Market - the worlds largest trade show. Twice each year, 100,000+ buyers descend on the city to view and book orders for their stores from the roughly 2700 furniture manufacturer showrooms. When a city is capable of handling such a huge event, hosting a custom rod building show is not much of a problem!
Piedmont Triad International Airport is located about 8 miles north of downtown High Point. Interstate 40 runs just north of the city and interstate 85 is just south of town. The main rail line between New York and New Orleans runs through the center of the city with the restored train depot located just 2 blocks from the show facility. Most downtown parking is free and lodging and meals are far less expensive than many other convention and show oriented cities.
High Point, NC is the best possible location for the 2011 International Custom Rod Building Exposition. You'll find it easy to get to and easy to get around in!

Graham Turner kindly sent me a reminder of an important fishing tackle auction teaking place in Lonon on 26 March:
The Graham Turner Final Collection
auction of collectors’ fishing tackle in London on March 26th,
Vintage and antique tackle is collected in over 30 countries and you may be aware a Haskell minnow lure made c1859 sold for $101,000 and a pair of Hardy White Wickham sea reels made in the 1930’s fetched £48,000 sterling. The items of tackle in this sale are even more desirable since the premier lot was made by the most presigeous maker of all, - the pioneer London maker Onesimus Ustonson. He invented the multiplier and his Original Multiplying Brass Winch, described as ‘The Holy Grail’ of collector’s reels made c 1762 will come under the hammer. The finest rods (4) will also be offered for sale dating from 1825 to 1856 and stamped ‘Earl Spencer’ since they were the property of the 4th and 5th Earl Spencer – the late Princess Diana’s ancestors. The most important display of artificial lures (48) in a glazed fronted case is expected to make a new record since Christie’s sold it in 1999 for £29,900. These are among almost five hundred lots that represent the creme de la crème of every aspect of fishing used over the centuries.

We've restructured the Rod Building Course to make the accommodation options more flexible. Accommodation at Les Mortiers is still an option, but also there is the opportunity to stay in a local hotel, chambre d'hote or combine with a caravan or camping holiday. This new approach also means that we can offer a wider choice of dates for courses and make it easier for you to fit in around your own holiday leave dates, personal commitments or desire to see more of France.

We are all very concerned and sensitive of what happend in the Gulf of Mexico recently. The oil spill has been perhaps the most frightening news of an environment disaster that I ever experienced (along the Gulf wars oil fields disasters).
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is however reopening some parts of its coast to fishing. Here the abstract (highlights are mine).
Some Alabama Waters to Reopen for Fishing
August 07, 2010
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Marine Resources Division announces that Alabama state waters west of the Dauphin Island Bridge and north of Dauphin Island that were closed as a precautionary measure due to the Deepwater Horizon disaster will reopen for recreational and commercial fishing effective at 6 a.m. August 8, 2010. All areas in Mississippi Sound not permanently closed will also reopen for shrimping at this time.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has concluded that the conditions for reopening specified in the agreed upon reopening protocol have been met for finfish and shrimp in the area designated in the July 26, 2010, Alabama Marine Resources Division proposal (Mississippi Sound). According to the FDA, such seafood should pose no food safety risk associated with contamination from the Deepwater Horizon explosion, fire and oil spill.
The waters will remain closed to the harvest of oysters and crabs.

West Slope Fly has added a new product to their online inventory.

Brand: CW Sam Carlson
Model: "FOUR"
Type: Bamboo
Description: Listed here we have a very special Carlson rod and another for the museum! This very special rod from the late great Sam Carlson. It also happens to be in "Mint" condition as you can see from the photo's! Just a special rod in all respects! Probably one of the finest small stream dry fly rods you will ever find. Sam only built a few hundred rods in his lifetime. Standard flamed cane, red wraps with black tipping, cork reel seat with black sliding band and butt cap. This is truly a special rod in many ways as most are in my book. The rod itself has been stored in a control environment for all these years! Just a wonderful piece of fly fishing history for the Master of the Quad.
Bob Nunley published a book and here is the announcement:
My new book is now on the Publisher's website (Whitefish Press, of course) as an upcoming release. Check it out at http://www.whitefishpress.com
I want to thank my good friends Michael Simon (afghantrout) for doing the great cover art, Harry Boyd (canerodcom) for writing a very complimentary intro for the book and Todd Larsen, the owner of Whitefish Press for being so patient with me during this entire process.
Also, thanks to Daniel J. Wohling... known in the book as Deej. DJ remained a great friend and hunting and flyfishing companion throughout years of my warped sense of humor and practical jokes. We had a blast, didn't we DJ? And there are more stories to come in a later book.
Check it out and if you want bucket load of good laughs and a couple of stories of just life and what made me what I am today, you can purchase the book directly from Whitefish Press. Later, I'll offer, on my website, personally signed copies for the retail price, but that will be a few weeks.

His production of all reel is over! The Dr. Paul Hermann Reel were Masterfully hand-made reels as you can see in the photo's! The true test is holding the reel in your hands then at last landing a nice Atlantic Salmon or fishing on your favorite Trout stream. In the world of high end reel they have past all tests and astonished the fly fishing community. If you are a collector or wish to fish these reels they will stand the test of time and have there place in history with the other great reels of the past present and future! Constructed of bar stock aluminum to tolerances of one-tenth, precision fitting end plates set into perfectly formed end rings and held together by cross pillars and screws made completely in-house. S-style, counterbalanced handle with black knob. Handle protected by end-plate. Infallible drum and shoe, externally adjustable drag with correctly directional drag adjustment control. Each reel has differences in finish and funtion. Chrome finish, polished aluminum, Standard finish (Bogdan Style) multiplier reels, single action and the Baby Herman. All are stunning reels alone and you'll never see another complete set for sale. I will at some point deside to split up the set however this would be a shame and if possible I would like to fine a collector that knows the importance of such a set.
Thank You!

I am not related nor writing for Tackle Trade Magazin anymore.
Mr. Carmine Lisella, through his old fishing tackle catalog which he kindly sent to me, share the sad news that Martin J. Keane, author of the monumental book Classic rods and rodmakers
, passed away on January 30th 2009.
Here I report what Mr Lisella is saying.
"Marty about singlehandedly established the field of collectible tackle in America, his tome is still the "bible" in the field. Having read and reread each of his catalogues when they arrived with great enthusiasm, I personally owe him a debt of gratitude and modeled my own efforts on his pioneering work. He made me feel like a colleague rather than a competitor and was always generous with his time and knowledge. With his passing the classic tackle community has suffered a great loss - he will be missed."
Carmine Lisella (from his catalogue "The Jordan-Mills Rod Co" -, Classic and Vintage Fishing Tackle, N0.32, Spring 2009)

(April 2009) Alberto Poratelli has now added some beautiful accessories in his "shop": agathe stripping guides and leather fishing rod tubes. All hand made! www.aprods.it/accessori.htm
IBRA AMBULANCE FUNDRAISING! (ending on 24 March, 2009)
IBRA has donated one of his rods made by Gabriele Gori and Massimo Giuliani to raise some money and so contribute buying an ambulance. The fund raising event is an ebay auction that you can visit here! Please support this IBRA effort if you can! The money raised by the auction will be given to the "Pesca del Cuore" (Fishing with the Heart") which is raising money for the ambulance (the link on eBay also carries their link).
The second European Bamboo Rod Makers gathering will be held in Sarnen, Switzerland on 25-27 September, 2009. www.gepliesste.ch
The new and beautiful Italian Bamboo Rodmakers Association (IBRA) Newsletter has just been published and you can read it here (English version).
I wrote a short article on Robert Stroh, the great German Bamboo Fly Fishing rod maker. Highlight of this issue Year 2, N.1 is the making of agate stripping guides by S. Ferri and C. Testa.
My friend Luciano Oltolini, very silently and modestly, as in his nature, told me he also managed to make his own stripping guides. Luciano is an excellent bamboo rod maker, a gifted craftsman and he also made is own wooden planing forms for quad bamboo rods as well as bamboo ferrules in the Poratelli-Gori way.
