Loop Fly reels
Loop fly reels seem to be the ultimate "forbidden" jewel to get. As for this writing (September 2010) you cannot order LOOP reels and rods directly but for Sweden and the UK or go through their website email process....
Alternatively...
As hard as it is from their website, you can try the completeangler.biz website which also store Petitjean items and so speak for unique quality by itself.
Or the USA flagship: looptackleusa.com from where you get the whole story: a date (1979, the year of company foundation), two names (Christer Sjöberg and Tony Karpestam, the founders) and SAGE! the great rod company.
Another person to mention is also Göran Andersson, a professional angler who helped the new company early on in their history, notably for the two-handed rods and for the reels.
The two founders basically introduced fly fishing into Sweden, first with a small operation (just a mail order and shop business) and a subsequent cooperation with Sage made the business grow to the point that today they fully produce their own products independently.
The first fly reel was made a in 1984 to fill a gap in what they felt was missing in term of quality: a revolutionary, very large, quality arbor reel. At first a flop, or just "too ahead of the time", but later Loop fly reels would be getting the approval of an ever larger group of loyal customers.
As per today (September 2010) there are three main series of reels:
"Some years back I bought from Christer Sjoberg at LOOP some of their first LOOP Classic 10/13 reel they made , for 15 foot rod line 10. This reel I have been using ever since for big salmon rivers mainly in Russia and Norway. After a good few years this reel is still going strong and travelling with me where ever I go for big Salmon , this reel have recorded 160 salmon over 20 pounds , 18 salmon over 30 pounds and 4 salmon over 40 pounds. Amazingly I never had problem giving the reel a hard time fighting all this strong fish and I am not a delicate man when it comes to tackle , all I have done is renewing the brakes one time and it is like new. You can trust this machine!"
