Julius vom Hofe Antique fishing reels

 

 

Julius vom Hofe antique fishing reels are part of the "vom Hofe" family litterally (the brother Edward and the father Frederick) and higly collectible.

Julius establihed his business in 1857, the brother Edward in 1867.

Pre-patent reels have a clover-leaf logo and and have a ball handle.

From a forum a read that

"The earliest Julius Vom Hofe fly reels do not have a hole in the foot. I have three examples made by JVH with no hole in the foot. On... is marked JVH, ... is marked Abbey & Imbrie and the other is a round aluminum fly reel marked JVH.

So it is clear that Julius vom hofe made reels for others as well in his first years.

Julius made 9 patented improvements on his reels. Here are some patents years.

  • 26 November 1867 - first patent: the bridge over the drive gear,
    17 November 1865 -patent : reel and plates made of hard rubber with protective bands in metal
    8 october 1889 - patent: rear spool bearing steel pivot and washer
    21 March 1911 -patent: B-Ocean star drag
    20 May 1924 - patent: reduced cost ree
