The Hardy and Bros company is better known for their fishing rods, yet Hardy reels are still well sought after by many fly anglers all over the world.
You can go here for an overview of the Hardy fly fishing reels up to 1984.
Hardy divides its reels into two kinds: "classic" and "performance"

The light Hardy Marksmann reel especially in combination with the Marksmann rod received favourable comments:
"...This reel has an unusual and unique spindleless design and it's not until you remove the spool that it reveals its secrets! This reel operates around a large central bearing built into the spool cage. This very clever design plus the spool and cage are both well ventilated to give a reduction in weight to just 3.5oz!
The mid arbour design gives very little line memory and of course has the benefit of picking up slack line quickly. The drag is a simple non adjustable click-set type which is very efficient and after all a reel of this size does not need a “stop a truck” type of setup.
Some people may prefer a slightly quieter reel but to my mind the sound of a running fish is music to my ears." (review by Mr. Simon Young, fishandfly.com)
