Fly Fishing Reel Reviews
Fly fishing reel reviews for those who look for an extra feeling while fly fishing.
I must say though, that in fly fishing the reel only HOLDS the line so the reel is not so important in the end as it is in the spinning technique...Well, is true? Is then a car's brake pedal only a place to rest yourt foot? Read this
excellent book on trout fly fishing to get a better insight!
So, you can buy a really cheap reel if you want and you will catch the fish as well...
A very elaborate, good quality reels (and expensive reel), however, will "relate" with you in a more tangible and long lasting way.
WHAT TO LOOK IN A FLY REEL
Good, precise machining
Good materials
Simple, efficient, drag system
Good anodising (if for saltwater this is a must)
Here are some suggestions that I share with you....
The first fly fishing reel reviews are for
The Ross Evolution
A tackle tour review gave an 8.75 out of 10 note ( here). The reel combines lightness and sturdiness, excellent drag system and design.
On the negative side, the reel is a little expensive (but you get what you paid for) and for some it does not hold much line.
This is a comment on Amazon: "The Ross Evolution is an incredible piece of machinery!!It is smooth and easy to use"
A good introduction that I found on youtube:
The Nautilus Series
Sometimes I simply check the best Swiss fly fishing shop (Hebeisen, I wrote an article about this historical company here ). What do they offer as simply the best? And the new Nautilus series from Florida, available in three sizes, for both salt water and fresh water, seems to be their favourite.
The high end is perhaps too expensive for many (although it is the Award Winner for 2009 Dealers' Choice in Fly Fishing Retailer in the UK) so a cheaper one should also do:
Here is a review for the high-end reel (as per July 16, 2010): "Awesome! The best reel you can buy. Super lightweight, zero maintenance, good looking, a flawless performer with a drag a smoothe as butter."

The Swiss and German...
Then Of course, for my fly fishing reel reviews I could not help asking my friend Daniel, a Swiss German in origin now lives here in Ticino, Switzerland. He is a fine connaisseur of not only fishing gears but also food, wine and cigars...
