Fly Fishing Basics
Following is a fly fishing basics tutorial that I put together from other writings that I did.
- When fly fishing you continously move your arms and body
- You need a fly fishing rod which is totally different from a spinning rod
- You need a fly reel which is totally different from a spinning reel
- You basically fish in rivers although lakes and even the sea are used
- You make your own baits, called "flies" which mimics insects which fish feed on
- Flies can be dry, nymphs, streamers and wet flies
- Dry flies mimic insects living in river habitats and which fly in the air touching sometimes the surface of the water
- Nymphs mimic the same insects but at their initial stages when they live in water and at the bottom
- Streamers mimic moving fish or insect at the surface or just below
- Wet flies are between nymphs and streamers and are used below the surface
- The whole fly fishing exercixe is to present the bait in front of the fish face in the same way as its natural food
- This is easier said then done because food changes with fish type, day time, season, location, wheather, river conditions and because fish can be very suspiscious especially when in highly visited fishing areas
