Collecting Hardy Rods and Reels
Updated March 2010
West Slope Classic Fly Tackle has added a new product to their online inventory.
Details:
------------------------------------------------
Brand: Hardy
Model: Perfect
Description: Classic LHW Hardy Perfect in 3-5/8 in "NM" condition Circa 1980's and hard to find in this size! Just a few light rubs to the reels edge. Not a Problem what so ever the reel is 100% sound!!! Brown ceramic line guide with reel foot that looks new. I don't think she was fished more than a handful of times if at all! This reel is one of the all time great Steelhead and light Salmon reels. Again the has seen little action and now is the time to bring her to life. Very nice reel!
Visit http://www.westslopefly.com/reels/dsp_reelDetails.cfm?reelID=266 for details!

Hardy Date Guide
Most of the early numbers can be considered as approximate dates as some numbers cannot be traced.
As general information, rods manufactured prior to 1966 should carry individual identification numbers (i.d.) stamped on the reel fitting, or butt cap.
Rods manufactured post 1966 will usually carry a simple letter coding inscribed in ink above the cork handle (month/year).
Cane rods manufactured between 1966-1981 may carry either, or both, of these identification numbers.
Individual numbering in the form of a letter and number inscription above the handle was re-introduced in 1981.
Anomalies within the above system include: G prefixed numbers to denote a composite rod - for instance, whole cane I split bamboo, and NE prefixed numbers to denote Mitre Hardy and Neocane rods made between 1963-1967. Both G and NE rods are difficult to date to a specific year.

Hardy Reels
Especially Rare and Desirable Special Order "The Hardy Zane
Grey" Big Game Reel with Fitted Leather Case. It was reported
that Zane Grey requested of Hardy to "produce the best big game
reel in the world", which resulted in the production of this reel,
constructed of Monel, which Hardy claimed to be the strongest
non-ferrous metal known. While offered in five standard sizes,
both the 7" and 8 1/2" sizes were only available as a Special Order.
This example, in outstanding condition, is a special order 7",
made to hold 1000 yards of #39 line, as indicated on the tail plate.
Also marked is "Made by Hardy Bros. Ltd, Alnwick, England".
Constructed with six pillars and a large star drag under the
sculpted handle. A click switch is mounted on the tail plate and
there is a wonderful insignia stamped into the handle's counter
balance weight. Includes the large fitted leather reel case with a
Hardy oiler, this outstanding condition combination is all original
with honest patina. Included is a letter from I. Blagburn, promotions
manager at Hardy from 1977 that was sent to the owner
to assist in providing history and a catalog page from 1930 featuring
the Zane Grey reel. Truly a great find. ($6,000-$8,000)
Early "Hardy's Pat. Perfect Reel" Marked Fly Reel. With a dia. of
2 1/2" and a 7/8" wide spool, this early 1896 check example is
marked with both the rod-in-hand logo and oval "Hardy Bros.,
Alnwick - Maker". With left hand threaded drum locking screw
and open race design with loose ball bearings (when opening up,
the bearings will scatter if tipped), this both large and small hole
perforated spool example has a smooth full length foot and
ivorine grasp as well as a strapped rim tension regulator.
In overall Ex condition. ($2,000-$2,500)
Hardy "Fortuna" Salt Water Reel. With a 6" dia., this sea reel features
the "Capstan Wheel" drag that replaced the star drag circa
1939, under the large dual grasp handle. The hard rubber grasps
are free from chips or cracks, with an overall grade of Ex
uncleaned. ($1,000-$1,500)
Hardy's Patent "Perfect Reel" with Early Check. This 2 1/2"
Perfect has an early check mechanism with strapped rim tension
screw. With small perforations on the spool and a left hand
thread spool screw, this circa 1894 to 1897 reel has a pinned foot
of smooth brass. With 12 ball bearings under the notched spool,
in about Ex original condition. ($2,000-$3,000)
Rare "The Silex Rex - Brit Pat No. 355949 - Made By Hardy Bros
Ltd - Alnwick, England" Level Winding Casting Reel. With less
than 100 reels produced from 1935 to 1937*, this rare level winding
casting reel from Hardy has a 4:1 ratio, a "Pat No. 272409"
marked ribbed brass foot attached by 4 screws to the solid frame,
dual hard rubber grasp handle and drag adjusting screw located
on the tail plate edge. A knurled tail plate mounted switch operates
the click on this Ex uncleaned example. A rare opportunity
to add a limited production reel to your collection. *information
obtained from FISHING TACKLE, A Collector's Guide by Graham Turner
($2,000-$3,000)
Hardy Hercules Trout Reel. This circa 1880's reel has a 2 1/2"
diameter, the smallest size offered and features an oval Hardy
logo with additional "Rod in Hand" logo on the face plate.
Intended to be a light weight reel, this offering from Hardy featured
a waisted foot and ivorine grasp. With a constant check, in
about VG+ condition. ($1,000-$1,250)
Hardy Bougle Duplicated Mark II Trout Reel. This circa 1917
reel has a 3" dia. and smooth brass foot. The aluminum finish is
in Ex condition with little sign of use. The rim control is without
the pre 1915 protective strap and there is a crackle finish ivorine
grasp. Overall, anexcellent example of a quality Hardy reel.
($2,000-$2,500)
Hardy "Uniqua" Marked Trout Reel. Having belonged to outdoor
writer Ed Zern, this boxed size 3 1/8" reel has corrugated
brass foot and two screw latch. Loaded with line and with moderate
wear normally found on a well cared for reel, in VG+ condition.
($300-$400)
