The World of Bamboo Fishing Rods
Bamboo fishing rods have a very long history but it's around the second
half of the 19th century (1800s) that the actual modern bamboo rod has appeared.
Bamboo fly fishing rods are by far the vast majority of the rods which have
being made out of bamboo, but one should not overlook the fact that spinning
rods can also be made of bamboo as the Rolf Baginski's bamboo rods set in
the picture here can show you.
I met German
Rodmaker Rolf Baginski in Waischenfeld,
Germany, in October 2007 along with other top split cane rodmakers such
as Jeff Wagner, Tom Smitwick, Bill Harms, Bjarne Fries, Alberto Poratelli,
Gabriele Gori during the German Rodmakers Gathering.
This is one aspect of this world which is particularly positive: it brings
together amateur and professional rodmakers worldwide, people with such a
passion, generosity and talent that is impossible to feel untouched.

If you want to know about the Waischenfeld
gathering and more news about next gathering ,
this website can be of help.
Also if you want to buy or
start building
your own bamboo fly fishing rod ...stay with us!
Finally one cannot forget that this world
of bamboo rods is very attractive to collectors as well.
All this bearing in mind that I am only "a dwarf on top of giants", that
I am sharing what others have taught me (.... here
you can see an illustrated guide on building bamboo fly rods...)
Ok, ready for the journey? What about learning a little bit about the different
kind of bamboo fly fishing rods?
This
is Simone with Italian
bamboo rodmaker Alberto Poratelli. Simone is one of the actual
end-users of the rods that Alberto makes.
Simone
fished this grayling in the Ticino river, in Switzerland using that bamboo
rod.
Below are some beautiful IBRA Bamboo Fishing Rods exhibited at the Waischenfeld
bamboo rodmakers gathering in October 2007.

In order to understand bamboo rods we cannot overlook the raw material itself: the
bamboo culm and the power fibers which makes it. Below is a close view of
a bamboo culm.
