Originally, it was a Swedish company founded from a watch company in 1921 and begun to make precision reels since the late 1930s under the son's founder Gote Borgstrom leadership.

The name Abu Garcia is a business name created from the union of "ABU" (A B Urfabriken, the original watch making company) and "Garcia" is from "Charles Garcia and Co.", a tackle company that ABU bought in 1980.
